Oil conservators(also known as oil reservoirs)are cylindrical containers. The volume of the oil conservator is generally about 10% of the oil volume of tank. The oil conservator is mounted on the fuel tank, connected with the oil tank by a curved connecting pipe. When the volume of transformer oil expands or shrinks with the change of oil temperature, the oil conservator acts as oil storage and replenishment to ensure that the oil tank is filled. Since the spare position of the oil conservator is small, reducing the contact area between oil and air as well as the moisture, and the speed of oil damp and oxidation is reduced. Oil conservators of large capacity transformers also use nitrogen and diaphragm to isolate the oil and the air contact, preventing its damp aging. The oil in the oil conservator is lower than the oil in the upper part of the tank, and the oil in the tank is hardly convection.
The oil in conservators should be kept at a certain limit to ensure that oil expands and shrinks at different temperatures with certain leeway. An oil-level indicator which is usually a glass tube or ferromagnetic is arranged at one end of the oil conservator, to observe the level of the oil surface. The bottom of the oil pillow is a deposit container used to sink the mechanical impurities, water and dirt immersed in the transformer oil. They will be regularly drained out through the drain valve.
