The clay model is a car body model with a clay sculpture in traditional body design. It is mainly used to express the actual effect of car styling for designers and decision-makers to verify

Since the styling is actually a sculpture process, it is necessary to use a sludge that is easy to process by hand and easy to modify. In the clay model production and development, the clay used in the body shape is similar to the general plasticine, but the requirements are higher. The main components of the sludge are 62% talc, 30% Vaseline and 8% industrial wax.

The stylist puts it on the wooden skeleton and uses a scraper, a blade and other tools to shape it, and sculptures the shape of the car in a certain proportion. A 1:5 small sludge model is usually produced first, and a 1:1 large model is produced after validation. The clay model made according to the actual size can be fitted with real tires to observe the overall shape of the car.


  ◆◆  Production Method


After the sludge model has been validated, the dimensions of the outer surface of the vehicle body can be recorded by a three-coordinate measuring instrument as the basis for drawing the body drawing.

  •    Baking sludge

  • Before the clay model is made, it is necessary to bake the sludge to soften. Because the characteristics that are not used are hot and cold, the filling of the sludge must be softened before it can be used.

  •    Recycling sludge

  • In addition to convenient molding, the sludge can be recycled and reused. There are many scraped mud pieces in the process of making the clay model. Sometimes even the sludge you took out of the oven may have hardened before it has been used up. You can re-recover the sludge and soften it. You can re-recover the sludge and use it. For the plasticity and viscosity of the sludge, it is advisable to recover 3-4 times.

  •    Filling the sludge

  • Filling the sludge can only be applied one layer after another, and the first layer of sludge should not be applied too thick. It should be appropriate to apply a force and try to fill a thin layer as evenly as possible. Then use this method to fill thicker layers of oil layer by layer. But don't be too thick, you can fill it a few times to ensure the fit between the sludge until the entire base is filled.

  •      Rough scraping mud

  • Rough scraping mud, also known as the first scraping mud. According to the template or the drawing, the excess part of the bulge is removed, the recessed area is filled, and the datum of the clay model is shaped to determine the large shape. This is a repeated process.

  • In the process of scraping the sludge, it is not possible to completely rely on the feeling. It is necessary to measure the drawings several times, analyze the reference points and characteristic lines, and use the elevation ruler to mark the accurate sampling points on the sludge.

  •     After the sludge is completed

  • The model should be confirmed again, and the comparison should be repeated to confirm that the shape is completely correct. The connection, transition, and smoothness of each surface must meet the design requirements.
